How To Obtain/Purchase macOS Server 5.4

macOS Server 5.4 is available to buy as an additional purchase on top of macOS 10.12 High Sierra.

From The Mac App Store - If You Already Have macOS 10.12

  1. To be safe:
    • Restart your computer.
    • Quit all running applications.
    • Disconnect all external devices except for monitor, keyboard, mouse and required storage volumes.
    • Eject all optical discs.
    • Unmount all servers.
  2. Make sure you are connected to the internet by using a web browser to go to Apple.
  3. Go to macOS Server 5.4 on the Mac App Store Buy it now on the Mac App Store.
  4. This should open the Mac App Store application (if it doesn't click the "View in Mac App Store" button).
  5. In the Mac App Store application click the "Buy" button.
  6. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  7. The macOS Server 5.4 software should start to download (an icon will appear in your Dock with a progress bar).
  8. When the macOS Server 5.4 application has downloaded it may automatically launch and ask you to continue.
  9. If it does, do not click Continue yet.
  10. Quit the macOS Server 5.4 installer application (yes, quit it).
  11. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and make a copy of/backup the "Server" item e.g. zip it and/or copy it to another disk or a DVD-R
  12. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and open "Server".
  13. Click Continue, agree to the EULA and then click Continue to download and install the rest of the Server software and finish the configuration.
  14. Follow the on screen instructions.
  15. Once macOS Server 5.4 has installed you should go to Apple menu > App Store… > click the "Updates" icon in the top right and update all other Apple software (An Apple ID may be required for some updates).

From The Mac App Store - If You Have An Earlier Version Of macOS/OS X and/or macOS/OS X Server)

  1. Prepare for macOS 10.13 High Sierra.
  2. Go to Apple's macOS Server Support web site and read through the information.
  3. Then when you are sure you are ready (you did read the macOS Server Support articles didn't you?) to be safe:
    • Restart your computer.
    • Quit all running applications.
    • Disconnect all external devices except for monitor, keyboard, mouse and required storage volumes.
    • Eject all optical discs.
    • Unmount all servers.
  4. Make sure you are connected to the internet by using a web browser to go to Apple.
  5. Go to macOS 10.13 High Sierra on the Mac App Store Buy it now on the Mac App Store.
  6. This should open the Mac App Store application (if it doesn't click the "View in Mac App Store" button).
  7. In the Mac App Store application click the "Buy", "Get" or "Install" button.
  8. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  9. The initial macOS High Sierra installer should start to download (an icon will appear in your Dock with a progress bar).
  10. NOTE: The initial macOS High Sierra installer is ~20MB in size so will download very quickly - this is not the full installer though.
  11. When the macOS High Sierra installer has downloaded it will automatically launch and ask you to continue.
  12. Follow the on screen instructions choosing where you want to install macOS High Sierra.
  13. NOTE: The full macOS High Sierra installer will now download and install - it is ~5GB in size. Without a fast internet connection the progress bar will take some time to actually show any progress - be patient while it downloads (go watch a film or two, do the shopping, get some sleep, etc).
  14. Once the full macOS 10.13 High Sierra installer has downloaded it will pause and wait for you to click "Restart" which will restart your computer and install the new operating system
  15. Once macOS 10.13 High Sierra has installed you should install the latest macOS 10.13 High Sierra Combo Update (if there are any available).
  16. Once the latest combo update has been installed go to macOS Server 5.4 on the Mac App Store Buy it now on the Mac App Store.
  17. This should open the Mac App Store application (if it doesn't click the "View in Mac App Store" button).
  18. In the Mac App Store application click the "Buy" button.
  19. Enter your Apple ID and password.
  20. The macOS Server 5.4 software should start to download (an icon will appear in your Dock with a progress bar).
  21. When the macOS Server 5.4 application has downloaded it may automatically launch and ask you to continue.
  22. If it does, do not click Continue yet.
  23. Quit the macOS Server 5.4 installer application (yes, quit it).
  24. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and make a copy of/backup the "Server" item e.g. zip it and/or copy it to another disk or a DVD-R
  25. Go to Macintosh HD > Applications and open "Server".
  26. Click Continue, agree to the EULA and then click Continue to download and install the rest of the Server software and finish the configuration.
  27. Follow the on screen instructions.
