Google Chrome
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Google Chrome checks for updates automatically by default
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Google Chrome checks for updates automatically by default - this feature can be turned off using the Terminal but we don't recommend it
- Download updates manually from the Chrome web site.
Chromium
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: [Install the FreeSMUG Updater for Chromium extension] Quit Chromium if it is running > open Chromium > the FreeSMUG Updater for Chromium will warn you if an update is available
- Turn on Automatic Updates: this feature is not available but if you install the FreeSMUG Updater for Chromium extension it will warn you when an update is available
- Download updates manually from the FreeSMUG Chromium download page.
Mozilla Firefox v57 or later
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Open Firefox > go to Firefox menu > About Firefox > click on the "Check for Updates" button
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Open Firefox > go to Firefox menu > Preferences… > General (on the left) > Firefox Updates heading > tick "Automatically install updates (recommended)".
- Download updates manually from the Firefox download page.
Mozilla Firefox v56.0.2 or earlier
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Open Firefox > go to Firefox menu > About Firefox > click on the "Check for Updates" button
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Open Firefox > go to Firefox menu > Preferences… > Advanced (in the menu on the left) > Update tab > tick "Automatically install updates (recommended: improved security)".
- Download updates manually from the Firefox download page.
iCab
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.7
- Check for an update now: Open iCab > go to Help menu > Check for iCab Update
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Open iCab > go to Help menu > Check for iCab Update > tick "Check periodically (Check once per day)" then click "OK".
- Download updates manually from the iCab download page.
Omniweb
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: Mac OS X v10.4.8
- Check for an update now: Open Omniweb > go to Omniweb menu > Check for Updates…
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Open Omniweb > go to Omniweb menu > Preferences… > Update icon > tick "Check for updates" and set your desired timeframe.
- Download updates manually from the Omniweb web site.
Opera
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Open Opera > go to Opera menu > About Opera > Opera will check for updates and show you a message under the "Version information" heading
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Opera checks for updates automatically by default.
- Download updates manually from the Opera web site.
Seamonkey
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Open Seamonkey > go to Seamonkey menu > Check for Updates…
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Open Seamonkey > go to Seamonkey menu > Preferences… > select "Software Installation" on the left under the 'Advanced' heading > on the right under the 'SeaMonkey' heading tick "Automatically check for updates daily" and "Automatically download and install the update".
- Download updates manually from the Seamonkey web site.
Maxthon
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.8
- Check for an update now: Go to Macintosh HD > Applications > App Store > click the "Updates" icon at the top
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Go to Apple menu > System Preferences > App Store > tick "Automatically check for Updates" and tick all the boxes underneath that heading.
- As the software is only available from the Mac App Store, updates cannot be downloaded manually
Yandex
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Open Yandex > go to Yandex menu > About Yandex > Yandex will check for updates and show you a message under the "Yandex.Browser" heading
- Turn on Automatic Updates: Yandex checks for updates automatically by default.
- Download updates manually from the Vivaldi web site.
Brave
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: OS X 10.9
- Check for an update now: Open Brave > go to Brave menu > Check for Updates…
- Turn on Automatic Updates: TO BE CONFIRMED
- Download updates manually from the Vivaldi web site.
Vivaldi
- Minimum version of macOS / OS X required: not listed
- Check for an update now: Open Vivaldi > go to Vivaldi menu > Check for Updates
- Turn on Automatic Updates: TO BE CONFIRMED
